How To Handle The Fear Of Terrorism

Erroll Southers (Former Deputy Director of the California Department of Homeland Security) gives expert video advice on: How do you handle the fear of terrorism?

How do you handle the fear of terrorism?

I don't think I have a fear of terrorism. I have a respect for the fact that that something can happen. I live with knowing that these people, whether they be domestic or international, are very dedicated, they're very smart, and most importantly they're very patient. The American resolve is sometimes something which is quite interesting. We're very impatient. When something doesn't happen in fifteen minutes we've decided it's not important enough anymore, but there's a resolve there. If you look at Bin Laden, the things he's written, he works on a 1400 a year continuum. 1400 years, so if it doesn't happen in his time it may happen in his son's time or their son's time. So I live with a respect. I also live with knowing that I try to do everything I can every day with the people I work with to make the area that I'm responsible for the safest I can. I live with knowing that by and large with all due respect, and this is not to instil fear in your audience, that somewhere in the world somebody's sitting at a table like this with a map of a target on the table. And hopefully it's something that I'm not responsible for and it's not something in this country.
