How can I have my relationship recognized as a domestic partnership?
Again, it depends on where the relationship is and where the person lives who wants to be in a domestic partnership. To be offically recognized in the state of California as a domestic partner you have to go to a notary and have a form signed, notarized and submitted to the Secretary of State. Many cities you can do it at the city clerk's office but that's not recognized by the state government, it's just recognized by the city government. Some businesses will regcognize domestic partnership if the people fill out an affidavit and file it with the business. So it's really different everywhere. There's no uniformity, which is one of the problems with domestic partnership as compared to marriage. It's very confusing, it isn't recognized outside. It's very different in each place, what it means, what it doesn't mean. In California for example when you register for domestic partner, you are liable for your partner's debt, all of their pre-existing debt, you're liable for it. Well, that's not the case if you register with the city of Palms Spings or the city of San Fransico. You are not responsible for your partner's debt. So it's really different everywhere you go. Typically, the best thing to do is to go to the website for your state government and do a search on that for domestic partnership or go to the website for the city you live in case the city recognizes domestic partnership. But typically you can find the information on various websites that way. You can do a search on the web and look for domestic partnership in your location and that should come up with information as well. If you are looking for your business you should go into your human resources department and ask them if they recognize domestic partnership and what it means and how you go about filing the forms.
