How can I keep my child safe while traveling in an airplane?

Every person in an airplane needs to be properly secured. Although Federal Regulations permit children under the age of two to ride in a parent's lap, a child cannot be held properly during turbulence, in a rough landing or in a crash. It's true that airplane travel is very safe. In fact it has a very low death rate. However, adults and older children are never permitted to travel without a safety belt attached, certainly not on landing or take off. And today, because of the number of injuries from clear air turbulence, every pilot reminds every plane load of passengers to leave the safety belt attached even when the sign requiring it is turned off. All that means to the pilot is that you are permitted to get up and use the lavatory. Why is this different for children? We can't see the difference. Children are forced to travel on airplanes, it is not their choice. So we, the adults, have to stand up for them. Safety Belt USA recommends that children travel in their safety seats on every flight.
