How do I know if someone is going to be a good friend or not?

The longer you've known someone for, the more you know how good a friend they really are to you. Sometimes you meet people who are really friendly in the first instance and they're really happy and they chat to you for ages, but if something goes wrong they drop you like a hot potato. I think the longer you know people for, the more solid you can feel in knowing how much of a good friend they are. Over time, if someone's kind to you, if they treat you in ways you expected to be treated in and you're having fun together, you enjoy their company and they're always there for you, then they are probably a very good friend.
