If you're self-employed, it should be pretty clear to you that you're paying your Class 2 National Insurance weekly or monthly by direct debit or directly to the National Insurance Office. If you are employed, it's much more difficult to know whether you are paying the right amount of Class 1 National Insurance because the computation is so complicated. Really, if the Class 1 National Insurance is shown on the pay slip and the amount looks about right, it's very difficult for employees to do more than that to check the position. The self-employed also need to make sure that they pay the right amount of Class 4 National Insurance. That's part of the self-assessment process and is calculated with the tax return that has to be filed with HM Revenue and Customs.
