How To Know If You Need A Therapist
Lynn Ianni (Psychotherapist) gives expert video advice on: How do I know if I need a therapist?
How do I know if I need a therapist?
I would recommend that if you don't know whether or not therapy can help you, you go in for one session and try it on. Let the therapist give you a bit of an assessment about what they see going on. There have certainly been times when someone has come to see me, and I'll say, "You know what? You don't really need to be here. I think you are doing great. I think you just need to trust yourself, that what you are doing is the very best thing you can be doing in that situation. And so, it is almost like a stabilizing effect where they just need somebody to say, "You know what? You are doing OK. You are doing a good job." If therapy creates dependency, it is not actually helpful and constructive. It really is supposed to invite you to be independent so if it only takes you one, two sessions, a few, to kind of feel like you are back on the road that you would like to be on and the pathway to the destination that you have created and certainly in the process that you want to be in, go, check it out.
