How do I know if I should be tested for Down syndrome?
It would be recommended that your pregnancy should be evaluated or tested for Down syndrome if you fall into certain high risk categories. The most common indication for evaluation would be maternal age. It is well known that the risk of Down syndrome increases with the age of the mother. It is generally recommended that if you're going to be over the age of 34 at the time you deliver, you should under go an evaluation for whether your foetus is affected by Down syndrome. Other women who should be referred for this Down syndrome test would be patients who had a child with Down syndrome before or who have other members in the family that have Down syndrome.
