How do I know when it is best to put my dog down?
It's a very difficult decision. I think it's the time when the dog starts to lose it's bowels, the dog is unhappy, it's disoriented, or it doesn't know where it is. I think certainly if you're having to help the dog move its bowels, you're taking the dog outside, and it doesn't eat, that's a good sign the dog is really ready to go. I really advise an at home death. What I mean by that is you have the veterinarian come to your home and they administer a pre-anaesthetic sedative to the dog, then they administer the euthanasia solution. I've done it myself here at my house many times and it's a very peaceful process. I really highly recommend that you try to do it at home if you can because that's the place where your dog is going to be most comfortable as opposed to going to the dreaded vet.
