How will I know when I should get checked for bladder cancer?

If you have blood in the urine, you need to consult your physician. The physician will probably order a series of tests, and if you're seeing a urologist he will probably do a cystoscopic examination. If you're not seeing a urologist, you may be referred to a urologist to try and determine the cause of the blood in the urine, because most patients who do present with blood in the urine do not have bladder cancer. There are a multitude of other causes that can cause blood in the urine, but you should be checked. If you have other new symptoms of the bladder, such as frequent urination that you didn't have before, unusual pressure or pain over the pubic area or the bladder that you didn't have before, which doesn't seem to resolve, I think you should see your doctor and they'll do the appropriate test to see if it's due to infection or not. If it doesn't go away, you should be referred to a urologist for further examination.
