How To Make A Vacuum With A Straw

Professor Gizmo (Amazing Science Presentations) gives expert video advice on: What is a "vacuum", and how can I make one with a straw?

What is a "vacuum", and how can I make one with a straw?

It's hard to describe a vacuum. A vacuum is basically when you take a jar full of air, and if I hooked something up to it and drew the air out, that creates a vacuum. So, if you put a straw in your mouth, a lot of people say that they "suck" on a straw. Well, you really don't suck on a straw. What happens is you create an airspace in your mouth, which gets bigger, and so some more air wants to get in, and if the straw is underwater the air that's outside in the room pushes down on the water surface and makes the water go up the straw and into your mouth So your vacuum is basically taking the air out of one area, and the other air trying to get in there and equalize it, and if water's in the way it pushes the water up and it goes in your straw.
