How To Maximize The Potential Of A Storage Space

Mary Astadourian (Professional Organizer) gives expert video advice on: How can I maximize the potential of a storage space?

How can I maximize the potential of a storage space?

I like utilizing storage utility spaces usually by putting in shelves if I can. Then I like using really large bins, sometimes ones that roll on wheels to store bigger, heavier items, camping equipment, any kind of major sports equipment that isn't normally accessed. I really love using containers in garages and attics and basements because you can really maximize the amount of storage space you have by doing that. If you have kids that love to skateboard, there's all kinds of things that you can purchase to attach the skateboards so that they can just literally hang the skateboards on the wall of your garage, and they're not lying around as a hazard for everyone. You can get large bins to throw all the helmets in that you use for bike riding and skateboarding and all those other things. There is so many great options for what you can do in these spaces and you're usually not as restricted by size as you would be inside the house so you can get larger containers to hold bigger things. So you really can be so creative with it. And again, there are lots of places that have experts, even online that can help you figure out how to maximize the space in a garage, let's say, and how to really create a whole new little house where you can keep everything. The one thing I don't recommend in keeping in these spaces is I don't really like keeping a lot of paper out in attics or basements or garages. Basements can sometimes be very damp, so I don't like keeping paper, it does get mouldy especially if you are keeping things in cardboard boxes. Same thing if you have any sort of rat issue or any kind of rodent problem and you're keeping cardboard file boxes. Rats love to eat through cardboard so I tend to be a little less inclined to keep things like that in those spaces. I wouldn't keep memorabilia or things that you place great value on in a basement or a garage necessarily. I know attics are sort of traditionally known for keeping that kind of stuff and I know that they can be. But again, I would want to make sure that you don't have a mildew issue or there's not excessive moisture in those spaces.
