How To Organise Your Notes

Simon Kemp (Lecturer, Module Coordinator) gives expert video advice on: How can I organise my notes?

How can I organise my notes?

Organising your notes is obviously very important, because when you are revising for exams or you are doings pieces of coursework, you need to be able to find your information. What we tend to recommend is that you have an independant ring binder for each module that you take. Within that module ring binder get some dividers and divide the main parts of the course up. You might have, say, 6 main themes within a lecture course. Therefore, you'd have six main dividers and you'd place your lectures in those dividers. Make sure with your lecture notes that you always write down the title of a lecture, the course code, the course name, the name of the lecturer and the date. The name of the lecturer and date might not seem that important, but when you're trying to organise your notes, having the date allows you to make sure you're filing things in the correct order. Having the lecturers name means that if there's something you don't understand in the future, then you've always got the facility to go and ask the lecturer for a bit of clarification at a later date.
