Harnesses are also specific to the type of climbing that you will be doing. Most modern rock climbing harnesses consist of a swami belt and leg loops that are padded, which means it will be comfortable to hang in, comfortable for repelling, comfortable for taking falls. If you are climbing on routes where you think you're probably going to hang a lot in it, and take very long falls, the more padding the better. If you want to be using it in the mountains, where you're going to be wearing a lot of clothes, which essentially would be your padding, you can go with a harness that's completely unpadded. Most harnesses are going to have gear loops, which means you can clip your quick draws and carabiners and other protection gear to your harness. Most harnesses have four gear loops, that's pretty standard. So if you're just getting started, you probably want something comfortable. I would suggest getting a modern sport climbing harness with a fair amount of padding. And depending on how versatile you want it to be, you might get adjustable leg loops, you might get fixed leg loops. There are those options too.
