How To Play The Game Of Life

Rob Daviau (Senior Game Designer) gives expert video advice on: Choose Your Path; Yellow Spaces; Green Spaces and more...

Choose Your Path

You can "start college" or "start career." If you're on the career path, have another player fan the career cards, choose one, and turn it face up. If you choose “start college” borrow $100,000 from the bank for tuition and start the game in debt. Each player spins. The player with the highest number goes first. Take turns, clockwise. If you're going to college… spin the spinner and advance on your path. When you get to “COLLEGE CAREER CHOICE” stop and pick a career. Do that by selecting 2 cards from the COLLEGE CAREER cards. Look at both and choose one. Each card shows you your career choice; Base & Max salaries; as well as taxes due. Place that card face up in front of you and discard the other card back into the deck.

Yellow Spaces

If you land on a “YELLOW SPACE” just follow the directions. On a COLLECT or PAY space... collect from or pay the bank the amount indicated. On a LIFE SPACE... draw a LIFE TILE and place it face down in front of you. If the draw pile runs out draw from another player. If you land on a SHARE THE WEALTH SPACE… get a share the wealth card. There are five types - and they allow you to get money from other players. Keep them face-down, and use them whenever you choose. On a TAX REFUND SPACE collect from the bank the amount of taxes on your CAREER and or COLLEGE CAREER card. Land on a LOSE YOUR JOB space and you must trade in your COLLEGE CAREER or CAREER card for a new one. You also lose all your pay raises. Bummer. Add a people peg to your car if you land on a “BABY BOY” or a “BABY GIRL” space. Add two “people” pegs if you land on the “TWINS” space. Then collect five thousand dollars from each player as a gift for having kids... and draw a LIFE TOKEN. On “SPIN TO WIN” pick a token from the pile. It has to be the same color as your car. Put that token on the number strip... one to ten. Give the banker an "investment" up to 50-thousand dollars. Now spin. If your number hits, the bank will pay you 10 times the amount you invested. If you don’t hit... you lose your investment. Feeling lucky?

Green Spaces

A GREEN SPACE is always a “PAY DAY”. Whenever you land on or pass over a green PAY DAY space ... collect your salary from the bank. Your salary's on your career card. If the space indicates a pay raise get it from the bank and place it near your career card. If your salary is already maxed out... ignore the raise and collect your maximum pay.

Orange Spaces

Most ORANGE SPACES represent an important LIFE choice. Whenever you reach one you have to STOP … follow the directions and spin again. “COLLEGE CAREER CHOICE” space requires you do just that…pick a college career. Do that by selecting 2 cards from the COLLEGE CAREER cards. Look at both and choose one. Place that card face up in front of you and put the other card back in the deck. On a CHANGE YOUR CAREER space you can change your CAREER for a COLLEGE CAREER or take a $20,000 salary increase. If you choose COLLEGE CAREER then randomly draw two cards from the COLLEGE CAREER deck. You can pick one or keep the CAREER card you already have. When you hit "get married" take another people peg for your car and one LIFE TILE. Then you get to spin for gifts. 10, 9, or 8 gets you $10,000 from each player. Spin 7, 6, or 5 and you get $5000. 4, 3, 2, or 1 gets you nothing. If a player can’t afford to give a gift they must borrow from the bank. On a BUY A STARTER HOME space you take a look at all the available STARTER HOME CARDS and decide which one you want. Pay the bank the price on the card. If you don’t have the cash you must borrow from the bank. When you land on RETURN TO SCHOOL you must decide whether to return to school or continue on the path of life. If you go back to school you must pay the bank 50 grand. When you land on a Get Married Space you get a PEG for the car and one LIFE TILE. Then you get to spin for gifts. 10, 9, or 8 gets you $10,000 from each player. Spin 7, 6, or 5 and you get $5000. 4, 3, 2, or 1 gets you nothing. If a player can’t afford to give a gift they must borrow from the bank. BUY A BETTER house gives you the option to sell your starter house for a new and better one. If you choose to upgrade look at the HOUSE cards and choose the house you want. Sell your starter to the bank for the price listed and buy the new house. If you don’t have the money then borrow from the bank. And remember you can never own more then one house at a time. A “RISKY PATH” space offers you many “SPIN TO WIN” opportunities that could net you some serious cash. Or you can choose to take the SAFE PATH.

Blue Lawsuit Spaces

Whenever you land on this space, collect $100,000 from any player you choose.

Bank Loans

If you borrow money from the bank during any of your turns, you must repay the banker with $5000 interest. You can repay when it's your turn, or wait until you retire.

Finishing The Game

When you get to the end of the path of LIFE you must do the following: First: Repay the bank all loans with interest. Second: Sell your house back to the bank for the price listed on the card. Move your career card and pay raises out of play. Keep your long-term investment card. You will spin on your turn and collect whenever your number is spun. Keep your “SHARE THE WEALTH CARDS”. They can still be played until all players complete the game. Collect $10,000 for each of your children from the bank. Choose a place to retire, either MILLIONAIRE ESTATES or COUNTRYSIDE ACRES and wait until all of the players have retired. There are advantages and disadvantages to retiring at either one. RETIRING AT MILLIONAIRE ESTATES: If you are the first to retire to MILLIONAIRE ESTATES, take a look at the three LIFE tiles placed there in the beginning of the game. Choose one and return the other 2 to the space. The next player to retire chooses from the two remaining LIFE tiles and returns the one back to its place. The third player to retire gets the last tile. Any players after that do not get any tiles. Your LIFE tiles are not safe if the draw pile runs out so watch out for another player stealing yours if they land on a Yellow LIFE SPACE. RETIRING AT COUNTRY ACRES: IF you retire at COUNTRY ACRES you get no additional LIFE TILES but the ones you have are safe. No one can take them. WHO IS THE WINNER: The player with the highest total value after adding up their cash and LIFE TILE values wins the game. DONE
