How should I prepare for body lift surgery?
When a patient comes in to my office after significant weight loss, there's a variety of questions that I ask. Firstly, have they stopped losing weight? Specifically, are they plateauing? If a patient continues to lose weight, I don't necessarily want to do the body lift surgery, because the more weight they lose the better off they'll be. The second important point is whether they have any medical problems. When's the last time they've seen their doctor? For many of these patients, they've had significant medical issues and after gastric bypass or total body weight loss those issues usually get better. I'd like to make sure that they're not having nutritional or vitamin issues. Those are some of the things that you need to address prior to having the body lift procedure. The other issue that comes up is a fact of whether insurance will pay for this procedure. Every insurance company is different and every doctor is different. You really need to check with your plastic surgeon and find out how they deal with the insurance companies.
