How can I prevent an upper respiratory infection?
Upper respiratory tract infections occur to all of us. I will tell patients, when they ask me this question, that the more you can limit your contact with the human race, the more you'll guarantee that you won't get these kind of infections. The problem is that you'll be in an elevator, for instance, with five people, and a guy will sneeze, the door will open, he'll walk off. The door will close and leave behind a whole bunch of viruses in the air, and he doesn't even know that he has the infection yet, and you don't know. But given that aside, washing your hands, getting your yearly flu shots, and all those things will be helpful in preventing upper respiratory infection. But, generally we just encounter these. It's kind of like, a dog gets fleas to prove he's still a dog, we get viral infections in our upper respiratory tract to prove we're still human beings. Sometimes we just can't avoid them.
