Can I prevent my sadness from developing into depression?

Currently there really not good stragies to avoid becoming depressed. However, what an individual can do is recognize early signs of depression, such as bipolar disease, and seek treatment before symptoms progress or where symptoms get to the point where there interfering with a persons function. Another consideration would be if you have a strong family history; you may want to be particularly vigilant for developing changes in your mood that persist over time and again seek treatment. In certain medical conditions such as a heart attack many cardiologists start patients on anti-depressants even if they are not depressed just to prevent that from developing, but that's an exception I think to the general practice.
