In todays environment it's very important to keep a vehicle away from the elements as much as possible, and by this I mean, exposure to the air, the sun and the rain. You want to keep it under cover or in a garage, any chance you can. Secondly, you want to make sure that you wash and wax the surface as often as possible. There's a lot of harsh chemicals and a lot of disruptive elements and pollution in our city air these days that can cause alot of early damage to the paint and finish of the vehicle. Lastly, if your vehicle is going to be parked for any duration of time in the winter, it may be worthwhile to invest in an inexpensive tarp, just to protect it from the hammering of rain and melting snow, over a long period of time.
