Identity theft is seen as a very big problem, and certainly there are an awful lot of criminals out there who try to steal our identities so that they can make money, either by taking our money, or by taking out loans in our name. There's no doubt that it happens. However, if you're careful, you can protect yourself quite easily. Step number one is to buy a good shredder, and anything that comes through your front door with your name and address on it, shred. There's a big temptation to just put it out in a box for recycling at the front. Never ever do that with things with your name and address on them. Always, always shred them, because those documents can be used to pretend to be you.
