How To Reduce Water Consumption On Your Home
How can I reduce water consumption in my home?
There are lots of ways to use water more sustainably in your home. Many of these require just a small change in your daily routine. A third of our water is flushed down the toilet each day. You can easily install a dual flush system or fit a save-a-flush or water hippo in your toilet cistern. These devices will help you save at least one liter of water every time you flush which, over a year, could save about 4000 liters of water. Be sure to fix any leaks. A leaky toilet can waste five liters of water per minute, the equivalent of 10,000 buckets a year. Also be sure to fix your leaky taps, as they can waste 13 liters of water a day. Other simple procedures include turning off the tap while you brush your teeth, washing up in a washing up bowl. If you wash a mug under a running tap, that can use about a liter of water. When you water your plants in the garden, make sure you do it in the evening. Water the roots, not the leaves. Be sure to collect rainwater in a water bucket, and use that to water your garden instead of using water from the tap.
