How can I reduce my risk of being sexually assaulted on my college campus?
Most sexual assaults on a college campus involve perpetrators known to the victim. The first thing is being selective in who you date and how you date someone you have never dated before. As we know, date rape is a very common concern. Next comes understanding the risk of letting people you don't know into a dormitory room or into an apartment or house, wherever you may reside. Basic safety practices as you traverse areas by vehicle, or particularly, on foot. Are you availing yourself of university transportation services. Many colleges and universities have escort systems in place, and we see sometimes co-eds don't want to use them because they feel they're inconveniencing people. When I was a university police officer, I told co-eds I would rather drive you around a thousand times to get you safely to your destination than work one rape case. So avail yourself of the safety measures that are there for you; be aware of emergency phone locations; report suspicious individuals; if you are followed, go to a place where there are people and seek help; and be very aware of your surroundings at all times. Just like concerns of any other type of criminal victimization.
