How do I start looking for my birth family?
An adopted person aged 18 and over can find out about their birth family, if they want to. If they were adopted before the 12th of November 1975 and they do not know their original name, then they would have to apply for what's called Birth Record Counselling. And, they would be seen by a local authority or adoption agency where the information would be given to enable them to get a copy of their original birth certificate. If an adopted person knows their original name and the adoption agency that placed them, then they could approach that agency direct to obtain more information about their background which will enable them to begin a search.
