Drew Pinsky (Addictionologist) gives expert video advice on: How do I stop someone from being abusive to me?
How do I stop someone from being abusive to me?
There's no magic recipe for stopping abuse. I think the first order of business is to recognizing it. Very often if you yourself have been the object of abuse, particularly at the hands of parents, you will seek out abusive relationships, so become aware of it. Realize that whenever somebody is exploitative or who doesn't value your feelings or acknowledge your feelings, I don't care how aggressive or not that person is being, that has potential for abuse. If you're not being heard, if your feelings don't matter, that's an exploitative relationship. It's not okay to be in that relationship. And fundamentally, the bottom line is, if you identify abuse, get out. You can't change that person, but you can get out. So get out of there.
