How can a parent stop their child or teen from using drugs?
The one axiom I would tell parents is “where there's smoke, there's fire”. The two corollaries to that are, if you suspect something's going on, something is going on. Act accordingly, get help. Secondly, if you have found evidence, if you've found pot on your kid, either at home in their room, in their backpack or at school or you found an illicit drug, that is not a casual thing. That is one of the most serious signs possible. Do not believe the child when they dismiss and minimize it. It simply isn't the case. I have never seen a case where the drugs have been found that it wasn't very serious addiction. So get professional help immediately if you find drugs or alcohol on your kid.
