How To Stop Yourself From Scratching An Itch

Daniel Behroozan (Dermatologist) gives expert video advice on: How can I stop myself from scratching an itch?

How can I stop myself from scratching an itch?

There is only a couple of ways to stop your self from scratching if you are at home. You can moisturize, you can use an antihistamine such as Benadryl or Claritin; now that's available over-the-counter. Alternatively, you have to use an over-the-counter anti-itch cream and most over-the-counter anti-itch creams don't have anything stronger than hydrocortisone in the United States; 1% hydrocortisone. This cream tends to be a rather mediocre anti-itch cream and that is done on purpose, because if something is serious, the hydrocortisone usually will not improve that itch. If you use hydrocortisone and your rash is not improving, it is getting worse or generally if your rash is extensive, you should see the care of your doctor.
