The same thing applies with white wine when it's been in the bottle for less than two years it has a greenish sort of pale yellow color. Two to four years it starts taking on more of a golden yellow. Six years on it starts to get into amber. When you can identify the age and this is not complicated anyone can do this it gives you confidence of being able to pick up a glass of wine and say "Oh I think this is a 2001 vintage cabernet" and everyone will say “Wow, how did you do that?”
