How To Tell If It's Organic
Melissa Kidd (Soil Association Information Officer) gives expert video advice on: How can you tell it's organic?
How can you tell it's organic?
Organic food will always carry a code. So the EU has defined the term "organic" under EU law. This means that anyone who wants to use the term on a food product has to be approved by certification body. And each certification body will have its own code. The Soil Association's code is UK5. And the UK codes have nothing to do with the actual strictness of the standards. It's just the order that they applied for their license. So, if you're buying something in a supermarket, or at a shop, then you can look for the code of certification body on the product. So this means that if you're buying food from a farmers market, they will always be able to prove their organic status by showing you the certificate. If you're buying food from a shop, then they should also be able to show you their certificate. If you're buying food that's already in a package, then you can see that the certification code will already be on the package. If you're buying organic food in a restaurant, there's three different types of proof: the whole restaurant can be certified - this means that every dish that they produce will be organic and every single ingredient has been checked that it's organic; or they can have a couple of items on their menu that are organic, so it could be organic lasagnas... sorry, lasagna with organic beef... and you can ask to see how they can prove that that beef is organic - and you're well within your rights to ask "Well, I'd like to see your records," you know, and you can look to see in their invoices have they paid an organic farm for this amount of beef.
