How do I know when I have a peptic ulcer?

In order to know if you have an ulcer, there are generally symptoms that can go along with it; usually pain or discomfort in the abdominal area. A lot of times however, ulcers can be completely asymptomatic and not be associated with any pain whatsoever. When an ulcer bleeds, there are generally signs of internal bleeding, such as blood in the bowel movements, which can show itself in either very black coloured stools, or if there's a lot of bleeding, more maroon or burgundy coloured bowel movements. On occasion when there's bleeding in the stomach, people can vomit blood or darker coloured liquid that looks like coffee grounds. These are all symptoms that certainly are suggestive of an upper gastrointestinal bleed that is usually from an ulcer.
