The first thing to do is look at it and see whether it agrees to the rules and laws of heraldry. These can be found by looking at a lot of reference books in public libraries, particularly books by Boutelle and Fox Davis around the turn of the 19th, 20th century. There is a very good book called the Oxford Guide To Heraldry, which was published about ten or fifteen years ago. And they will give you a general insight into what genuine Coats of Arms look like. Then, if you're still not sure, write to the College Of Arms, send us an example of the Coat of Arms and we'll be able to look at it and tell quite easily whether or not it's genuine.
