If you're looking for the history of a particular place, well most libraries stock gazetteers or atlases or maps that will show roughly where places are within Britain. You may need to think about varying spellings because a lot of these spellings may have changed through time as well. But Web sites such as oldmaps.co.uk will allow you to type in a place name and sometimes a post code, and then it will link you to an ancient historic map showing you what that place looked like in the nineteenth or early twentieth century.
