How can I turn a great idea into an invention?

Most people start with this great idea and they have to simplify the idea so it's a product. I always tell people that, if you look at some quotes, you know Edison always said, '1% inspiration and 99% perspiration'. There's some truth to that. You have to have your great idea, and then you have to get that idea to a prototype phase. After you have the prototype phase developed then you bring that back to the design phase in terms of product designs. Because you can't just make an ugly product, you have to have something that looks right, it's colored right, has the right finishing, the right materials. Then you have to design a marketing program to communicate the benefits or extra value of this product to the consumer. And if you do that, then that little triangle; idea on this side, prototype, product design, and then communicate it to the consumer in the center, will bring you to market.
