Human Resources Regulations
Melissa Omansky (Employment Attorney, Los Angeles, California) gives expert video advice on: How can a manager or employer avoid legal problems when giving employees evaluations? and more...
Does every company need an employee handbook?
There is no law that requires an employer to have a company handbook, but it certainly is good practice for a company to do so. It advises its employees what the company policy is, and it provides the employer with the means to disseminate important personnel policies, such as anti-discrimination and anti-harassment policies.
What documents should be kept in an employee's personnel file?
Every employee should have a personnel file maintained on them, and in that file, all important job-related documents, such as the job offer, the job description, and any reprimands and benefits packages. That should all be kept in the employee personnel file. Things that I would recommend staying away from keeping in the personnel file are things such as investigation notes. However, you do want to keep the final report in the employees personnel file.
