If we don't have a 24 hour urine study available to us or stone composition based on analysis of an obtained stone that one has passed, then primarily to prevent kidney stoned from forming, increasing fluid intake is the best rule of thumb. A minimum of approximately two quarters or two litres, plus the addition of the juice of one lemon per quart or litre would greatly reduce the risk of forming new stones. Additionally, however, if we are able to perform a 24 hour urine collection, much more information can be obtained, which would allow us to give advice on dietary manipulation; either avoiding certain products or increasing the intake of other products in order to prevent stones from forming in the future, once again.
What foods should I avoid if I am prone to uric acidic kidney stones?
Your case of kidney stones requires avoidance of purines, and you can find purines in fish, poultry, and some other meats as well. Red wine is a major culprit, as are cheese and also nuts. So, if you could avoid those when you have a uric acid stone formation problem, you can reduce your risk for forming more stones.

For an individual who's prone to calcium oxalate kidney stones, the primary method of reducing risk is to reduce oxalate intake. In order to do so, one needs to avoid certain foods like leafy green vegetables, coffee, tea, chocolates, and frequently nuts could have oxalates as well. By reducing the intake of these food products, the oxalate content in the urine will decrease, thereby reducing the risk of calcium oxalate kidney stones.
