Charles Sophy (Private Practice in Adult, Child and Adolescent Psychiatry) gives expert video advice on: What are the warning signs that my child might have a learning disability?; How are learning disabilities diagnosed?; What are the most common treatments for children with learning disabilities? and more...

What is a "learning disability"?

A learning disability is a difficulty an individual will have in some aspect of education, whether it is arithmetic, or math, or English or processing. Those learning disabilities are tested and diagnosed by psychological testing. The most common learning disabilities usually fall within the range of arithmetic or mathematics or reading or processing of reading.

What are the primary causes of learning disabilities?

Primary causes of learning disabilities have been shown through research to be genetic for the most part, and neurological including connection within the brain. So learning where those deficits are and then building on the strengths of that individual will make the capacity to combat learning disability function at its optimum.

What are the warning signs that my child might have a learning disability?

The signs that your child may have a learning disability will be decompensation in that area, so most likely you will see it in school decompensation, or changes within their work quality, and that's where you'll start to get some feedback. You may see a reading issue early on, with the child not being able to connect to a reading process, and that may be an early sign that you want to investigate. If you suspect that your child has a learning disability, the best place to start is with a discussion with your primary care doctor about what you're seeing, and then he'll give you the next step.

What are the most common treatments for children with learning disabilities?

The most common treatments for children with learning disabilities are, number one, get it diagnosed and then move onto where that deficit is to aquire the appropriate connections for either extra tutoring or another way of learning, finding the way that suits the child best and solves that deficit so that you are able to bring out the mental strength of that child. The prognosis for a child with a learning disability is usally excellent if caught early.

I have mild learning disability's also pshicial disabilitys also a possibility of borderline personaliy disorder was dianosed with it last oct I have had major operation this yr also my nan has died too I used to have lots of friends but the last 7 mths my parents won't talk to me because they think I wont talk to a cousilor but I do went to talk to one which I saw in the mental health team I saw this pshcologist for 4 mths in the last month of therapy he said I am sorry dan u need somebody fr the learning disability team to talk to u so he closed my case so I thought that was it but it wasn't, but they r not saying it LD and basicaly saying I have lied about it, and he is or dosn't want to admit to it. But he did say he hasn't got the experience in LD but he hasnt remembered that my support worker was there when it was said, but for the last 7 mths I have seen no friends or my family my family because they believe I wont talked to anyone about getting therapy but I have. But I have always saying they had to have LD experience which my care team and my care managers don't think that is unreasonable nor do I ether. I did try to see my mum but she got the police to take me away fr the house why because she sees me as a bad person because of this condition she over reacted because I think shes been blinded by mental health to think I am a mad man when I am not mh team and ld team are being nasty to about each other and they never get anything done to help me. while they r messing around my health not my emotional state which is more stable than I have ever been I had a Roux-en-Y Bypass I have been stuggleing with pain also adapting to taking the vitamin tablets at different times also I have acute pain in the back the stomach I hardly sleep at night, because of the pain I am in. I am on one of the stongest painkillers a person can have also I am on other pain killers too but the pain has been getting worse since the op. I wish in a way I never had the op because my life has turned upside down parents of my friends don't want me in the social clubs anymore they accuse me of being a mental health person than a ld client which I have been 4 last 32 yrs there has been an increase of ld people going into mental health services in the last few yrs why because ld social services are trying to save money my social worker said they would be able to provide more support but they can't provide that sort of day support but mh only provide therapy but I don't cope well in group therapy so it wouldn't work 4 me they also are not trained in pshicial disabilitys so they cannot help anyway there has been a big change around 4 ld people who have been transfered over to mh but like mh cannot help us because they have no traning with people with ld I used to go to a mental health day centre I was hit by skecserfinic on the back of the head hard nearlly losing my balance told a member of staff stright away they said sorry dan they cannot help it I didn't understand why they couldn't help it at the time but do now when u looked around the centre there were posters saying there is a zero tolerance towards voilence to all staff at all times thats great. But what about the clients also I let that pass then this guy joined the centre who had been there before but was thrown out some time before after a week I saw his lower body with zip undone exposing everything got upset about this because 15 yrs ago over a 2 yr period I was sexually abused it brought back flash backs, so I told this to a member of staff about this client and also told them about this etablishment I attended at the time they said sorry dan its distressed you but he can't help it just tell him to zib himself up I said ok left it at thit but it carried on after a few days but he unziped himself again overiously same happend again I asked him nicely to zip himself up he verbally spoked to me agesivelly so I picked everything up and left never to return mental health centre clearly are not bothered about the vunerable people who attend the centre its left me scared and scared 4 the future. I feel I have a very uncertain future I am a very scared young man in the NHS health directorate that all nhs doctors and others have to follow it saids 4 my condition that I am only allowed limated therapy for BPD but the but the BPD directorate which was set us by the founders of the condition says that people with BPD need a life time of therapy also it saids BPD can never be cured fr the cond but it saids in the NHS directorate it says it can be cured but it cannot there is a specialist centre to attend in another county but its inpatients that are detained until their condition is stablelised or they are waiting to go into a specialised community unit or where I would go is a community unit 4 9mths at the cost of £136.000 or $200.000 which mental health team hasn't got that sort of money anyway the other thing that it is not disabled accessable ether I checked on their site but I am more interested to go to the states for treatment anyway why 1. the founders who reconised my condition are based in washington DC and in canada also and other places around the states too I have found the therapists and other professionals in the US are far more experienced than uk and have far more experienced how to work with people with complexed needs and understanding where in the UK u find pshcologists are specialised in one area like my is an expert in learning disabilitys that is all but the US there are professionals who are trained in various of areas in the states also therapy ideas are interesting to can somebody reconmend anyone in the uk to access me for elagbility 4 one of the centres in the US only genuine replys please thank you
