What is "microdermabrasion"?
Microdermabrasion is a technique of removing the outer layer of skin usually the dead tissue or the exfoliated tissue from the outer layers of the face. It's mostly done by acidticions and in a medispa it's somewhere in the middle between the least invasive and most invasive procedures. Patients seem to like it as it improves the skin and gives a glowing complexion. It will not remove some of those darker areas of skin but generally gives a nice healthy glow to the skin.
Why would I need microdermabrasion?
Microdermabrasion works great for patients that have superficial wrinkles and some outer layers of skin that really need to be cleaned up. If you're looking for a deep long-lasting treatment, microdermabrasion is not going to be the answer for you. If you're looking for a healthy glow to your skin with very little down time, very little redness, then microdermabrasion's probably a good treatment for you.
Does microdermabrasion hurt?
Microdermabrasion does not hurt at all. In fact, some patients like the way that microdermabrasion feels, and in fact no anesthetic is usually used. Patients are generally happy with the feel of microdermabrasion.
How long is a microdermabrasion treatment?
Usually with microdermabrasion it is a series of treatments, anywhere from four to five treatments really to see a nice great improvement in the skin. Microdermabrasion treatments should last about half an hour. For some patients it'll be less, but depending on your esthetician and pre and post treatments, it can last up to about an hour.
How will my skin look and feel after a microdermabrasion treatment?
Microdermabrasion treatment will give you a healthy, glowing appearance for your skin and for your face. It will get rid of some of the dead cells on the outer layers of your face and of your skin. Again, it's going to give you a nice healthy glow. Microdermabrasion is not going to give you a very long-term solution, such as a chemical peel or a laser, but if you're looking for something simple, not too costly, and a nice quick improvement, then the treatment is a great alternative.
What are the risks associated with microdermabrasion?
If done properly by an accredited institution, there really are almost no side effects associated with microdermabrasion. The only complication is that certain patients are looking for a more significant result, and microdermabrasion doesn't necessarily always give you a long-term lasting result.
What are the benefits of microdermabrasion?
The benefits of microdermabrasion are clean, healthy, glowing, radiant skin. In terms of long term effects, there are really no benefits. Microdermabrasion is considered strictly a cosmetic or beauty treatment. Therefore, if it makes you feel good, and makes you look good, then that's about all the benefit to it.
Can I receive microdermabrasion after an IPL treatment?
Microderabrasion and IPL treatments are in some respects complimentary. You can certainly have both of them done, but essentially they work the same way. So I would usually stick with one of the treatments as opposed to combining both of the treatments. So I would stick with one session or one of microdermabrasions and then move to IPL or vice versa. I wouldn't necessarily combine the two.
What post treatment should I do after receiving microdermabrasion?
There are a variety of substances that are available after microdermabrasion treatment, but the best thing to do is probably to use a hypoallergenic moisturizer and keep your skin clean. Save your money with regards to some of those post-microdermabrasion treatments. A good moisturizer will be your best post-care treatment.
How much will a microdermabrasion treatment cost?
Microderambrasion treatments usually cost anywhere from $200 to $500. Many medi-spas offer packages which can run up to $1,500. So check with your medi-spa. Again, most of them will run package treatments, at most, they will charge $200.
