Nightlife Basics

Galina Liss (Galina Liss) gives expert video advice on: What makes a nightspot 'hot'?; Why is there such fast turnover among hot clubs?; What is a 'bouncer'? and more...

What makes a nightspot 'hot'?

What makes a nightspot hot is basically the people. Places come and go, and usually clubs here in LA are only good for a couple of months, like three of four months and then people get ADD and they just want to go to the next new bigger and better deal. But, it is basically the people, because generally celebrities will go to a place and they will start it off and make it really hot and then all the trend setters influences other people such as models, actors and other famous celebrities will follow. They will go there and it will be really hot. Then you have your B, C, D crowd that will follow after that, and then by the time you reach the whole gamut of people, the place is probably not hot anymore. So the cycle starts again at a new venue with different decor and theme; the whole deal.

Why is there such fast turnover among hot clubs?

People here in L.A. are spoiled, as far as nightlife goes, because there is so much to choose from. Maybe you have four red-carpet events going on on the same night, as well as the hot clubs. So people here can really pick and choose what they can go to, and we're spoiled. When you have that kind of gamut to choose from, you can basically be picky. You can say, "I'm sick of that place." After you've been there for a couple of times you're like, "I'm over it," so then you wait for the next hot spot to go to.

What is a 'bouncer'?

A bouncer or a doorman at a nightspot will generally be the one policing the front, making sure that all the right people are in and basically all the wrong people are kept out and basically keeping authority. If you're standing too close to the rope, he'll be the one yelling at you, telling you to form a line. That way, police don't fine them for any citations. Just making sure it's orderly. Just basically, when the promoter or whoever's running the night of that night spot comes in and out, they're basically their security and the one holding down the front, basically.

Who decides who gets into a hot club or bar?

Usually, it will be the person running the event. If it's a special event, it will be people who are putting on the event. If it is a promoted night, then it will be the promoters who are letting people in and out either because they know someone or because they're on the list. For a special event, normally you would have to be on the list. They are stricter on the private event because companies pay thousands and thousands of dollars to throw really extravagant amazing parties. It's not a good idea to crash one of those.

Can I crash a hot club or event?

Well, it depends how much cohune do you have to crash. Depends how thick your skin is, I guess. If you know the right name and you drop the right name at the door and you are a hot girl, I would say you have really good chances of getting in. If you are a guy in L.A. and you don't know anyone, good luck! Just save your time and embarrassment and just stay away.

What name can I drop to get into a hot club or event?

I guess the right name to drop by any door to try to get in a venue would most safely be the club owner's or promoter's name. And a lot of people try to use the promoter's name because everyone knows who's night it is. But in order to get into the hotspot, you possibly could be asked to text them. Then you're stuck if you don't know that really. But normally the venue owners.

What is the difference between a 'club' and a 'bar'?

The difference between a club and a bar is that a bar is just normally a place where you can just sit and drink. Generally there's no dancing in bars. Clubs are actually licensed to have dancing. Believe it or not, there are dancing licenses. And clubs are licensed for dancing.

What can I expect from a night at a typical hot spot?

At a typical night spot, you'll have amazingly beautiful people. People might not be the friendliest, so I suggest bringing a friend with you, so you're just not sitting by yourself all night or if you're shy. You'll find great atmosphere, and beautiful decor. If you're at a club, there'll be an amazing DJ. If you're at a special event, you'll have probably an array of orders to choose from including an open bar and dancing and just amazing things in decor.

Why is it so hard to get into a hot spot?

Basically, people always want what they can't have. So generally, the trend has now (in clubs) is to make the venue smaller. So that they won't let as many people in. Then it's more exclusive. The more you can't get in a place, the hotter it becomes just because people want what they can't have.

Why do some clubs have different names on different nights?

The reason clubs have different names on different nights is that they are being promoted by different promoters. Like for example, Monday night at one spot is called for example "Cherry" because its done by "X" promoter. Tuesday it's called "Apples" because it's done by a separate promoter. The promoter invites their own people, and they usually get a certain percentage of the sales at the bar.

What is the difference between a 'promoter' and a 'special events producer'?

A promoter primarily just invites people to come to their party or club, and a special events producer is someone that coordinates the whole event from A to Z, including media and outreach to people. Generally, it includes the nitty-gritty details of event production that you don't normally see. Normally, you'll see something and you're like, "Well, that's easy to do," but when you do an event there's a lot of details that people don't know that go into a special event. Especially in L.A, you have the red carpet, you have talent to coordinate, you have dimensions, you have rentals, you have decor, you have the theme, you have staffing set up, strike and load, and it's a lot of details.

Where do promoters get their lists?

Promoters get their lists from people who they meet constantly. They're constantly adding to their list. Of course it would behove them to get a lot of hot girls on their lists, and that's why a lot of them deal with all the modelling and acting talent agencies in town, so they can have all the pretty people at their events.
