Plastic Surgery Terminology

Steve Fallek (Plastic Surgeon & Medical Director, Face Focus Medical Spa, New York City) gives expert video advice on: What are "implants"?; What does "body contouring" mean?; What does "asymmetry" mean?

What are "implants"?

There are a variety of implants that we as plastic surgeons put in the body. There can be breast implants, nasal implants, calf implants, just to name a few. All of these are foreign substances made of anything from silicone to bone that we put in to enhance a part of the body.

What does "body contouring" mean?

Body contouring includes liposuction, tummy tucks, breast surgery - such as breast implants or breast reductions - or any types of changes to the body. Body contouring usually doesn't include facial surgery. Specifically when we talk about body contouring its usually in the breast and abdominal area.

What does "asymmetry" mean?

Asymmetry is a fancy term for being unequal. And if we look at our bodies there is really no symmetry in our body. We as plastic surgeons obviously try and make everything look that same, but if we look at our right side of our body and our left side, they would never be exact opposites. So normal asymmetry is always acceptable and normal.
