Playing First Base In Baseball

What is a 'first baseman' in baseball?

The first baseman is the defender on the field who's home is the first base area. He's the guy that, when the ball is thrown to first base to get an out, that's your job, is to be there. Also, the first baseman is to field ground balls and to field pop-ups. Anything that has to do with the first base side of the field, or the first base area, that's your domain.

What are the defensive responsibilities of a first baseman in baseball?

The defensive responsibilities of the first baseman, first and foremost is on any ground ball, is to get to first base and be a good target and be the receiver for the throw. Other responsibilities are to hold the runner on base if there's a man on first already, and he's taking a lead to steal second, you need to be there to receive the ball from the pitcher. Thirdly there's a lot of responsibility in bunt place, there's a first baseman, there's times you have to go rush to get the ball, because you know the second baseman's coming over behind you to get to first base. There's other times you have to learn how to read the ball and it's not your ability to get the ball , you have to be able to run back to get to first base. So, these are things that are already predesigned and you'll learn as you go, but, usually it's being at first base for the infielder is the most important thing. Secondly is bunt defense. And, then lastly, really you are what 's called the cut-off man from the outfield, so anything that's hit into the outfield, if there's a throw made to home plate, your main responsibility is what's called the cut off man. This is to get to a point where your a good target for the outfield to throw to you as a relay man to then throw to home plate.

What are the key physical attributes of a first baseman in baseball?

Some key attributes for a successful first baseman is usually an ability to pick the ball up out of the dirt. Invariably, position players will throw the ball in the dirt, or they may throw the ball high. You might say he has ‘good hands' to pick the ball out of the dirt instead of it bouncing off his glove and allowing a safe runner. He has the ability to have good instincts or good hands to catch the ball in a tough play in the dirt. Agility is vital as he must have the ability to reach, extend and get the ball and have good mind and body awareness of where he is so that he can get back to the bag if he's in midair. Great athleticism, good agility and good hands are really important to be a successful first baseman.

What is the proper way to catch the ball as a first baseman in baseball?

The proper way to catch the ball as a first baseman is to, number one, see the ball well and make sure you catch it in the webbing. Number two, is to not stretch too soon. As a first baseman, the ball could be coming from your right, it could be coming from your left, or straight. Those throws can all be what's called slightly offline. If they are offline and you commit yourself too soon, then you're going to be at an awkward angle and might not be able to catch the ball. Your primary responsibility is to see the ball well, to try to catch it in your glove, and to not anticipate too soon that it's going to be a straight throw. You should anticipate that the throw could actually vary and therefore you have to have the agility to shift based on where the ball is coming from.

What are some tips on how a first basemen should field a poor throw in baseball?

A first baseman can learn to deal with poor throws by simply practicing. Its very hard to learn how to pick balls out of the dirt, especially what is called an in between hop, which is something that's not very close to your glove without a lot of practice. Practice is the number one element in learning this skill. The second principle that you have to identify is if the ball is something that you can get on a nice long hop and just wait for it or it is something that you have to stretch out to, to take away maybe a very difficult kind of hop. Three, you have to know when to come off the bag if the ball is not near the bag and just accept that the runner is going to be safe, but you don't want to take a chance that the ball is getting past you and the runner getting to second.

How should a first baseman react defensively to a bunt in baseball?

First baseman should react defensively to a bunt in baseball, really based upon what he's practiced and what the coach has told him his responsibility is. If there's a man on first versus if there's a man on first and second his responsibility may change. The bottom line is he needs to know what his responsibility is and if his responsibility is to crash, so to speak, which is to cover the first base side of a bunt. Then he needs to learn on how to get to that position as quick as possible. If his job is to just stay home, so to speak, then he'll learn how to stay home, but whatever it is it's always going to come back to whatever the strategy of the play creates.

When should a first baseman field a cutoff throw in baseball?

When a first baseman should field a cut-off throw will always depend on where the ball is hit and what kind of arm strength the outfielder has that it's hit to. So if the ball is hit deeper to the outfielder, then the first baseman should move out towards the outfielder so that he can get to the relay throw faster as opposed to the ball bouncing to him. If the outfielder's coming in towards the home plate for a play at the plate, then he needs to learn how to back up. So the first baseman needs to give the throw a chance to get all the way to the catcher, because he may not need to cut it off. Lastly, if the outfielder has a poor throwing arm, then he has to know that and he has to move out whether the outfielder comes in or not, he's got to be able to go out and meet the outfielder and get the throw, because maybe he has the better arm and the sooner he can get the ball, the sooner he can make a good strong throw to the next base.

If a first baseman is fielding the ball, who is going to cover first base in baseball?

If you're the first baseman and you're going to field the ball, then one of two people have to be there. Either the pitcher's going to be there for you, and you're going to let him know that ‘I'm taking the ball', which tells him if you're taking the ball, then he's got to get to first base and cover it. The second thing that will happen is the second baseman, if his responsibility isn't to be at second base for various reasons, then his job will be to come behind you and cover first base. Hopefully the pitcher or the second baseman are there for you if you go to get the ball.
