Postgraduate And Career Planning

What are the best courses to prepare me for job experience?

The classes that you take are all, conceivably, very important to help you to be a well-rounded person. But, in particular, there are some classes that can help you on the job right away. Classes in accounting, classes in written communication, classes in technology are all geared towards a much more practical focus than some of the theoretical courses that you might also be taking as a student.

What are the best courses to preprare me for life experience?

Some of the courses that students choose to take help with life experience skills, and maybe a course requirement to take, is a course in self exploration. Some colleges offer courses on how to tackle college and life skills. And so these courses may include studying the marriage process and how people get married and how they live together on a budget. Other courses that are helpful for life experience are communication courses, speech courses. Also courses on religious studies or other courses related to how people work together to accomplish large tasks. All of these courses are very specifically directed towards how to live and how to be successful as a person.

What are 'semester abroad' programs in college?

Many colleges and universities offer the opportunity to study abroad. Study abroad means leaving the United States to take courses in another country. Many colleges and universities will have a certain set of colleges in other countries that they have a prior arrangement with, and they will accept the courses that the student takes in the other country for courses in the college that the student is actually attending - the home campus. Study abroad is a wonderful opportunity to be able to learn about new cultures as well as to study in a foreign country.

When do study abroad programs typically occur?

Colleges and universities have different protocols and regulations about when and who can study abroad. Because each college is different, it's important to talk to your study abroad office. The professionals in that office can help you with planning your study abroad experience in your educational career. It's very important that you visit that office as early as possible so that you know when to plan your study abroad semester.

What are college 'internships'?

Internships are opportunities for students to study and work at the same time. It's a college credit opportunity at a local business or other agency and gives the student the opportunity to get on-the-job work experience. Internships are often offered through an academic department, or they may be offered through the career center. Internships are opportunities for students to apply what they learn in the classroom to a real life employment situation. Internships are usually offered by companies, agencies, and a variety of industries. They are often for credit, and sometimes they can be paid or not paid. Students who pursue an internship are getting valuable on-the-job experience and are often making connections for when they graduate, so that they have a future contact or even possibly a job offer when they are finished.

How do I find college internships?

Information on internship programs is usually available in a couple of places, at least at most colleges and universities. One place that they're often found is in academic departments. Many times a faculty member will encourage students or even require them to take an internship so that they can complete their degree requirements. Other students who do not have an internship as part of the core of their major requirement may still choose to pursue one or two internships during their four years because they want to gain practical experience for a degree program that may not be that practical. Often times perhaps an English major will choose that they want to do an internship in a magazine or at a newspaper so that they can get some experience writing in a print media format. It's important to take more than one internship if you can during your four years because it certainly broadens your experience and makes you much more attractive to employers.

How can I prepare for my first job interview after college?

Interviews out of college are very, very important to prepare for, and I always tell students that it's very important to visit your career center as early as possible. Students should visit the career center many times in their first year as a college student. It may be a little crazy to think about working just as you're getting used to a brand new college environment, but students who have their eye on being a successful employee with a top corporation, firm or agency will have to visit their career center often. They will have prepared a resume and gone through mock interviews, and are ready to answer any questions that the employer may have about the skills and abilities that they have acquired while they were a college student.

What are the best courses to prepare me for graduate school?

The best classes to take to prepare for grad school depend entirely upon what your academic interest is. It's very important if you are bound for graduate school or even if you are thinking about going to graduate school, to become very familiar with the discipline that you are interested in studying in graduate school, and also to work very closely with several faculty members in the department that you are taking your undergraduate degree in, so that they can provide excellent experience for you. They can give you opportunities to collaborate with them on their research and they provide exceptional recommendations when it is time to apply for graduate school.
