Brian Berry (External Affairs Director, FMB) gives expert video advice on: What jobs can I do myself?; What jobs should I not do myself?; Can I ask a builder for advice on DIY? and more...

What jobs can I do myself?

You should only do jobs that you feel comfortable and able to do. Because very often if you start doing a job, you can actually end up paying more money by having to get it rectified at a later date.

What jobs should I not do myself?

You shouldn't do any jobs that you feel uncomfortable or unable to do yourself. Also, there are more specialized areas, like gas boilers, electric work and heating, which you should always get a professional builder in or contractor to sort out.

Can I ask a builder for advice on DIY?

Yes certainly. You can always ask your builder for advice about a DIY project, but bear in mind you may have to pay for that advice.

Can builders repair a bad job?

Yes, builders can certainly repair a bad DIY job, but it actually makes more sense to get someone in who is a professional builder to carry out the work in the first place, otherwise you're adding the cost to yourself.
