Preparation And Approach On Your Territory
Vera Hughes (Co-author Teach Yourself: Setting Up A Small Business) gives expert video advice on: What can I do to prepare for a sale?; What should I wear?; How can I get an insight into a customer? and more...
What can I do to prepare for a sale?
Preparing for a sale if your customer comes to you, there's not a lot you can do in a sense before they cross your threshold, as I said earlier you probably pretty well know what they're like, but on the other hand you must make sure that everybody and everything is totally ready for that customer who will walk in about two minutes after opening time. Just be ready for them.
What should I wear?
What should you wear? The answer is: something appropriate. In some instances of course, a uniform is appropriate. But, if for example you're selling fashion items, well you might well wear what you sell, what's fashionable. On the other hand, don't wear it if it doesn't suit you, because if it doesn't look good on you, believe me, you're not going to be able to sell it. And I think probably the thing to think about here is be yourself but play the part.
Should I approach immediately?
You can approach them by saying something like, something about the product. "That's a good color isn't it? Only came in yesterday." Now that shows that you know your products. You know your stock and you're up to date. Then you can go on with something like "Was that the sort of thing you're looking for?" You've started the conversation and then you can carry on the process.
