Bill Kunkel (Editor-in-Chief, "Tips & Tricks" Magazine) gives expert video advice on: What is the best quality of the Sony PSP? and more...

What is the "Sony Playstation Portable" (PSP)?

The Sony Playstation Portable is basically your hand-held miniature video game system that also runs movies, though in a format that s not compatible with any other medium. It's not like you can buy a movie and play it on your DVD or on your Playstation 3, or anything like that. They only play on the system. They have beautiful movies and some impressive graphics. It uses a little nub type joystick controller that you move characters around with and then it's got the set of control buttons. So it's basically a scaled down simplified video game system, shrinked down to fit in your hand.

What are the general graphic capabilities of the Sony PSP?

For a handheld machine, the general graphic capabilities of the Sony PSP are rather high. Though again, because the system has not been as successful as I'm sure Sony hoped, and some of the developers hoped, you can see a lot of the games where there were shortcuts taken. That's what happens if you've allotted a certain amount of time to develop a game, and you feel the system may not last that long, you have got to get it out there while people are still buying that software. So, a lot of the games do look rushed. A lot of the games seem as if the play just isn't right; they could have been designed to play much better. However, there's a vast assortment of software for the PSP; a huge assortment. Any kind of game you can imagine there are probably 15 of them on the Sony PlayStation Portable.

What type of controls does the Sony PSP use?

The primary movement on the Sony PSP is generally controlled through the sort of nub-type controls that you find on laptops, where you basically just put your thumb over it and roll it around. That's what they give you on the PSP. In addition, it's got a set of action buttons located in the usual positions. It doesn't have too many. The controls are generally fairly simple because it's a small screen. Obviously, you don't want to overcomplicate the process of handling these tiny little buttons and these tiny little controls, so it's fairly simple. Some people might feel that in a lot of games there aren't enough controls. In fact, your thumb can get kind of sore rolling that control nub around.

What is the best quality of the Sony PSP?

The graphics are very nice on the Sony PSP. If you want a handheld with top quality colour graphics then the Sony PSP is the best system out there. Again, the huge library of material that the Sony PSP has is a good quality.
