What are some radiology or radiation myths?

One of the radiology myths that the public generally holds, is that any radiation will cause cancer. That just isn't true. We always want to be sure that we limit the amount of radiation that any person who undergoes a diagnostic examination is exposed to, because there is always a relative risk versus benefit of having that examination.

Can I get cancer from getting an X-ray?

The likelihood of having a cancer as a result of diagnostic radiology examinations is exceedingly low. However, it is very important that you as a patient be aware that cumulative doses of radiation could potentially have some harmful affects, so that you must keep in contact with your physician to indicate if you have had multiple examinations or frequent examinations which might raise your concern.

If a woman finds a lump in her breast, does that mean she has breast cancer?

A lump in a woman's breast can be due to many different causes. They can be due to a simple fluid-containing cyst which could be benign or it could be due to a cancer. But that is the reason for doing diagnostic examinations in order to differentiate between the variety of different reasons for having a lump.

Is all radiation dangerous?

There are many different types of radiation, either occuring naturally or used in diagnostic examinations. They are particulate in some instances, they are waves in some other instances and they will have to have different effects on the body. The danger of radiation to any individual is variable, it depends on that individual and the health of that particular individual. Some people are more susceptible because of genetics.

Will receiving radiation cause me to be radioactive?

When receiving radioactive from a diagnostic examination you will not become radioactive. None of the radiation waves that past through your body are retained by your body.

Will I become sterile if I get an X-ray?

Man will not become sterilized as a result of diagnostic radiology examination. However, it is always wise to limit the amount of radiation that a man is exposed to especially in the genitals as much as possible.
