Roseanne On Fame And Celebrities
What's it really like to be famous?
At first it is so exciting and it is so gratifying and cool it's like, “Everyone loves me! They like me ! They really like me!” That whole Sallie Fields moment is so awesome like that. It's like “Thank you”, people are giving me things, talking you saying I'm good, They're you know it's unbelievable because it never was like that. Gee they are inviting me places, they want to hear what I have to say. It's so awesome; this really is worth everything like that I have sacrificed of myself to get here. This is Balhalla! And then right after this it's like, “This is hell, this is horrible, this is awful!” once it turns, it always turns too. Well a lot of these people seems like they don't get a big harsh turn, some of them keep sailing but for the ones like me who gets that harsh turn where it boomerangs on you - it's just terrible it's like “What was I?” Somebody should have told me this”, but they're all dead hmm..? Perhaps that should have been a clue, like everyone I idolized is dead and died either by their own choosing or some level of it - drugs or whatever. It's terrible, scary thing. It's a drug for sure, I like Rosie's book, ‘Celebrity D-Tox'. That's the right thought, that is like an addiction like and then it just turns like, “Oh my God! I'm so excited!” then it's like, “Everything I say will go everywhere, everything I say will go everywhere, oh my God!”
Should celebrities marry other celebrities?
It's just all crazy people. If you are a celebrity your partner should not be a celebrity too, that's insane and can never ever work and never does work. Maybe it works, I don't know? It doesn't seem like it would. Once you're famous, like in Hollywood famous, not like for curing cancer famous, I'm sure that's probably the same crazy thing in it's own way. There are just so many wolves here and vampires your odds of meeting a decent functional human there about two percent, really they are.
What's wrong with Britney Spears?
I feel sorry for her, because I know she's trapped like a rat in a maze of her own making, and she has nobody there to tell her how to make it better. Certainly not her mother. That's why I went on my blog, Roseanneworld.com, and I wrote, "Britney, you're a bad mother. And your mother's a bad mother, too. You'd better listen to what the judge is telling you. He's trying to teach you a lesson, and you'd better learn it." I don't think anybody talks to her like that, so I tried to talk to her, I did that -- because I like sticking my nose into other people's business -- but also, I do have answers for young women and mothers and everyone who lives, and so I want them to hear it, because I know they're not hearing it anywhere else. So I feel like, if I'm the only one who's saying, or who can say, then I'd better say it, until I hear someone else come up doing it, I'd better do it. It's the idea that needs to be heard, and not only by the person who's saying it. So, yeah, Britney Spears, she's trapped like a damn rat, and I'd like to get a hold of her, because I know some of the people who are surrounding her used to try to surround me, and they're no good. They just pimp out these young girls. That's all they really do. I used to say, "Agent" is another word for "pimp".
Can you explain Britney Spears' relationship with the paparazzi?
She slogs through an ocean of them to get her Starbucks. I guess she does it everyday. She goes down there in a different outfit. And that might be the only time she's getting any good people, "We love you", energy. They stand there and they're like, "Hi Britney, can we pump your gas for you?" She's like, "Yeah, thanks." So she don't have anbody to help her. She doesn't have anybody on her side to help her. And they're giving her some kind of something that she craves but I hope she could find it in somebody who really wasn't making any money off her.
What do you think about the Writers' strike?
I'm pro union for any kind of pro union right now. I mean especially now because they're all going away. So I hope the writers get some satisfaction but I bet they won't. I mean, especially when you can't. The people are their own entertainment now they just eat a plate of bugs, and it goes on for a season. She only ate two hundred bugs but she's going to eat a rat next week, and she might win twenty dollars.
Are young female celebrities prostituting themselves?
The very young girls dressed in sexually provocative, that's what makes the whole world go round. People can't get enough of that. So when are they too young, I don't know, five, sixteen, thirty, but don't miss what's being done. It's just, it's prostitution, its pimpdom.
Why are Americans so hypocritical?
We have to do that thing where we're at odds with ourselves. You've got to get a belief and then oppose it. It's not enough to just get a belief and live it. You can't... you can never do... that is unheard of. Get a belief and live according to it, that can't happen. They get a belief, or profess a belief is more like it because nobody really believes anything, except money, but profess a belief and then be at odds against it. You know, have an abortion, feel guilty, become pro-life. Go out there and have the placard with the... it's like all that stuff is getting more and more to where people are not going to be able to ignore what's really going on anymore.
How will the Internet change entertainment?
It's a great renaissance right now for art and artists who have something to say and it is too for people who will eat bugs for $25 on camera. That is the other side or extreme of it. A lot of people are entertained by that. A lot of people are transfixed by it. My son is 12 and he will show me crazy stuff like that and I am just transfixed. But really good intelligent content, that's coming too. There is so much of it on there. I look at it and think “I could never top that”. If I have an idea and somebody it doing it better than me I just walk away and try to come up with something else. It's an exciting challenge and it feels like “wow, I'm really creative now” because I don't know if I will have a successful thing or not. Its fun to try it, to stay creative and keeping your edge.
Is there anything real about reality TV?
Oh that absolutely sucks because there's no reality to it. I did a reality show, which now I'm starting to post some of the footage, 80 hours of footage. The reality of reality TV, it was just so unbelievable. People say, "Hey, you ought to write this story, or an article, or something." But you know they're on their guard to make sure nothing real happens. That says it all right there. If anything real happens that's got to be expunged.
What do you think of Hollywood movies these days?
Every time I see one, I wish it was better. I've never seen one where I went, "Wow, what a great movie," ever except for Jackass. I like that movie. Everything was just so extreme. It was unbelievable that that made it to the screen, the audacity of that going to theaters was just fantastic to me. But I never see any that I really, that I like. They're stupid. I'm trying to think of some I've seen that have good humor and story about the actual times we live in and it seems relevant. I guess they say Harry Potter is the kid's, it's like their Wizard of Oz. But I think they suck. I don't care about special effects--although I did like Lord of the Rings. I have to say I did like that. I liked when the trees came alive and they came to the aid of the people, of the beings. The trees walking down that hill, that was a great moment in movies. I like the Lord of the Rings Movies.
