Running Shoes

How do I know what running gear is right for me?

Preparing yourself to run requires the proper running gear, so you should think very carefully about what is going to work for you. Usually, you want to go to a very reputable running shoe store with sales people that are runners and that can advise you best for the proper type of clothing. Obviously, you are going to be looking for the outside clothing to be materials that can breathe so that your body can get oxygen through that material. That is very important. The next most critical things are the proper running shoes.

Where should I go to find the right running shoes?

You need to know that you have shoes that will support you and give you the most support for those 49,000 steps that you take in the race and the many thousand steps you take in training. You are going to want a pair of shoes that is conditioned upon your height and weight, and reputable running shoe shops will give you that proper gear to afford you that opportunity.

How do I tell if the running shoes fit well?

You'll know. A reputable running shoe shop will have you put on the shoes and run, either on a treadmill or outside on the sidewalk. They're going to watch you run. They're going to see if you supinate or pronate and they're going to find out what is best. You'll know if you've got the wrong shoes. Your feet will tell you if they're too small, if they're not long enough, if they're too narrow, or if they're not wide enough. Usually that will come in the form of some red marks on your feet, soreness in different parts of your feet, or possibly blisters. That's how you know if they don't work properly.

Should I do research on what shoe is best for me?

Yes, that will help, and you can go to the website and you can look at all the major brands. They have all the shoes, and tell you how they are made and what support system, but usually if you go to a reputable running shoe shop and someone that is knowledgeable about shoes, they'll tell you the different models that are best for you. Here again, you don't want to go to a running shoe shop where the manager says, "Hey this is the best shoe for you because it's overstocked in the back room", and that happens a lot. So, here again, find out from people you know, where they've gone for the best results with shoes, and take their advice.

How much should I expect to pay for a good pair of running shoes?

The cost of a good pair of running shoes, and you have to have a good pair of running shoes, to get a sale for $29 someplace at a big outlet, is not the shoe for you. So usually a good pair of running shoes, that's needed for proper training for a marathon, are going to run between $75 and $130.

What is the most important thing to look for in a running shoe?
