Situation Change
I am moving house what happens to my benefits?
If you're moving house, because most benefits are paid directly into your bank or building society, there should be little interruption, as long as the other conditions - the conditions on which you're being paid the benefits - still stand. But what you do need to do is find out who is paying your benefits - is it the local council, is it Jobcentre plus, is it the pension service, is it Her Majesty's Revenues and Customs, and it may be more than one of those - and still notify them of your new contact details.
I have decided to live with my partner what will happen to my benefits?
If you're making a decision whether or not to move in with someone, then it does depend what benefits you may currently be receiving, and indeed what benefits they may or may not be currently receiving. In order to know what impact that decision will have, you need to go to an advice organization and take details about your benefits and about your savings and your income, where you intend to live, and the costs of that. And then they should be able to realistically advise you on the impact of your benefits.
I think my benefit payment is wrong, what should I do?
If you are currently receiving a benefit and you think that how the benefit is being paid or the actual amount of the benefit is wrong, you should either contact an advice organization or the department that's paying your benefit as soon as possible. If you need to challenge that decision, there are quite strict time limits that apply within which you must challenge it. Seek advice.
I am starting volunteering work, will it affect my benefits?
Obviously it must be unpaid volunteering. Or if you are being paid, it must only be reimbursement for expenses. If you are starting volunteering, you could check with the department that pays your benefits just to make sure it is not going to have any impact.
I am going on holiday what will happen to my benefits?
If you are a benefit claimant and you're going on holiday then it does depend whether you are holidaying in the UK or going abroad. It will depend what benefits you are claiming and how long you are going abroad for, and each benefit has different rules. So, before you go, I would seek advice.
