Skateboarding To Snowboarding

Tony Alva (Pro Skateboarder) gives expert video advice on: How does skateboarding relate to snowboarding?; Are the tricks in snowboarding similar to tricks in skateboarding?; Is snowboarding on the same level as skateboarding and surfing? and more...

How does skateboarding relate to snowboarding?

Skateboarding basically was the only reason snowboarding even exists. Snowboarding was nothing until skateboarding came around basically, snowboarders were just being like, their emulating skateboarding, on the snow. That's all it was. And the fact that their strapped in made it a little bit easier even. But I think snowboarding now if taken it to a completely different level because of, well the progression of their equipment, as well as the fact that there's a lot of guys now that just are strictly like, they just take helicopters up to the top of mountains and stuff.

Are the tricks in snowboarding similar to tricks in skateboarding?

I would say just about every trick they do on a Snowboard started with Skateboarding.

Is snowboarding on the same level as skateboarding and surfing?

It's not really connected to the whole board sports thing. I think the way surfing and skateboarding is, it's completely in a different, in its own little deal now. And I think the only guys the only really cross it over the way that they do at this point, are kids like Sean Whites. There are some new school kid that are really good skateboarders that are also amazing skateboarders too. But I've never really been that big of a fan of snowboarding because it's kinda just the bastard son of just like where skateboarding did like given what it did to snowboarding. Snowboarding has just gone off on its own little tangent to where it's just really commercial, it's very specialised and it's also not that accessible to the average kid.

Which pro skateboarders have also made it as pro snowboarders?

Not many, but there are a few. Like I said, Shaun White is like the perfect example of how a professional snowboarder can be a really good skateboarder. He's very adaptable.

don't think snowboarding on the same level as skating or surf, in my town the mountain is like the waves. Skating is just to hold us over until winter.

um, yes skateboading and snowboarding are related, but they both come from surfing. the first major snowboard was called the "snurfer" and wasn't much more that two ski's strapped together. it wasn't until 10 years after this that skateboarding had much to do with it at all. yes, snowboarding cost more, but you can do so much more with snowboarding that skateboarding. again with the tricks... I think they're more akin to surfing than anything

what a dumb*ss! why dont you interview a pro, rather than a hobo? I have skateboarded, surfed, skii'd and snowboarded my entire life and I would not relegate any of them. Main difference between skateboarding and snowboarding?....concrete vs snow !!
