Synthetic Diamonds

What are 'synthetic diamonds'?

Synthetic diamonds are diamonds that are created in a laboratory, by man, and they exhibit the same chemical, optical, and physical properties, as natural diamonds that are mined from the earth.

What's the difference between synthetic and natural diamonds?

The difference between a synthetic diamond and a diamond that's mined naturally from the earth is that the diamond that's mined naturally from the earth took billions of years to be created, whereas a diamond that's created in a laboratory is created in a much shorter period of time in a more controlled environment by man.

Why would I want to purchase a synthetic diamond?

A natural diamond is mined; it comes naturally from the Earth. It was produced through nature. A synthetic diamond is produced in a laboratory. It's essentially a matter of taste. If you prefer a diamond that comes naturally from the ground, that is traditionally mined, that is from nature, then you can buy a natural diamond. If you prefer a diamond that is created in a laboratory, then you make the choice to buy a synthetic diamond. It's really a matter of taste.

Can I tell the difference between a synthetic and natural diamond?

It is very difficult for the layman with the untrained eye to tell the difference between a natural and a synthetic diamond. There are telltale characteristics in both. Natural diamonds actually exhibit, under close inspection, they exhibit characteristics from the regions in which they were mined, where synthetic diamonds exhibit characteristics of the lab in which they were mined. So an expert could tell the difference but the average individual really couldn't.

Are synthetic diamonds real diamonds?

Synthetic diamonds are real diamonds that are created in a laboratory. Because they exhibit the same chemical, optical and physical properties as a diamond that is mined naturally out of the earth they're considered real diamonds.

What colors do synthetic diamonds usually come in?

In general, synthetic diamonds come in oranges and yellows. But like natural diamonds, they could come in any color.

How can you tell if your diamond is natural and not synthetic?

In order to tell whether a diamond was natural and not synthetic, you'd have to go to a professional gemmologist or demonologist for inspection, using a spectrometer or other tools to be able to determine that. But it would be very, very difficult, and the untrained eye really couldn't catch the difference.

Do synthetic diamonds cost the same as natural diamonds?

Natural diamonds and synthetic diamonds aren't generally priced the same. Synthetic diamonds are, in general, a little less expensive that natural diamonds. However, it all depends on the diamond itself. The 4 C's determine the value of a diamond, and that, again, determines the price.

Why would I not want to buy a synthetic diamond?

The reason that you would want to buy a natural diamond and not buy a synthetic diamond is that natural diamonds took millions of years to create and are the perfect representation of your relationship. A natural diamond is the symbol of the dreams of couples in love coming true. That's why you'd want to buy a natural diamond and not buy a synthetic diamond.
