The Beauty Contestant Interview
How important is poise for a pageant contestant?
Again, poise is very important. Poise is eye contact, keeping your head up, eye contact, not looking down at the grown, looking directly out. That I think is poise and that's confidence. If your shoulders are slumped, you know, it's just those little extra things that I look for and if you have your shoulders back, even if you're not the most secure, but if you have your shoulders back and you're making eye contact and everything's on point, that's wonderful.
What questions do the judges ask?
When the girls come in we have their bio's in front of us. So I just peruse that, check it out ask them you know things that they put on their just to kind of expound on that. Alot of times when I see them shaking or getting nervous, about to crack. I'll try to lighten the load I'm so like. What is your favorite movie? And then you just see a sign of you know "woosh" and they you know, I get them back and relaxed and then we go in for the questions again. So we just get a feel for the girls as they come in, read through their bio's see what they had to say and then just ask them stuff about that. Were not you know trying to trick them in any way. It's really honest.
What makes a good pageant interview answer?
Honesty. And even if you don't have the right answer. Just being honest, and if you don't know just be like "I don't know". Don't make it up. Just being sincere in who you are as a person will take you much further than not being who you are. Absolutely.
Do you ask topical or political questions?
You know you do ask those things, but these girls are not running for president. They're not in the primary so that's really not on my mind. They're going to be doing other things. A lot of them want to help people or help causes, or help organizations. We ask them about that, you can tell if they're sincere about their answer and even by their body language. If they know nothing about their topic, what their cause is, breast cancer or whatever it may be, you get a feeling about it. You get a feel for the girls that work for a cause.
Can a contestant rescue a 'bad' answer?
Its just practice, practice in speaking an talking she can. But you can tell her she has gone wrong down the road but yesterday something happened where one judge was looking her at her by asking a girl questions - that wasn`t the right girl but I had no idea, she just answered those questions like they were her, she owned them and that to me- I was like- fabulous. That was great they were the wrong questions to the wrong answers everything she didn't blink, she didn't look at the side anything going on,she just answered the question like they were her own that I didn't even know.
