^__^;; Goth aesthetics come alot from the European gothick art movement in the 18th century. It came from Romanticism's belief of the Middle Ages as the 'Dark Ages', filled with arcane mysticism, black magic, and pagan witchcraft and superstition. Look up some of the artworks of Henri Fuseli, Piranesi's "Carceri 14", and a bit of Goya's works. If you look up Gothick (yes, with a 'k') in an art history standpoint you can see alot of the aesthetics that the modern goth movement borrows from. Gothick is mostly spelled 'gothic' nowadays however. Hope this helps out too.
